The Birth of a Business
Before venturing into the candle-making business, I dabbled in jewelry-making years ago. However, my creations didn’t gain much interest, and I eventually let that go, focusing instead on my career as a teacher and being a mom. As my children grew older, I knew I wanted to step back into the business world but struggled to figure out exactly what kind of business to start. I spent countless hours brainstorming new product ideas, but nothing seemed to click.
As a longtime fan of Shark Tank, I took notes on every episode, learning that success didn’t always require inventing something entirely new—sometimes, it was about putting a personal touch on an existing idea. That realization led me to candle-making in 2023. I’ve always loved candles and spent a lot of money on them, but I often found myself wishing for scents that weren’t available. So, I decided to make my own, blending fragrances that resonated with me and creating a product that felt unique and personal.
When I shared my idea with my students, they became part of my journey in an unexpected way. They helped me come up with the name Auntie Tats’s Candle Shoppe, a gesture I will always cherish. As a way to show my appreciation, I plan to donate a portion of my sales to Green Grove School in Neptune, NJ, giving back to the very students who helped bring my dream to life.
Each year, I lead my students through a Young Entrepreneur Project, teaching them that it’s never too early to start a business. It’s an extensive project, but one they truly enjoy. As my own business continues to grow, my hope is to create a scholarship fund to support a graduating senior who dreams of becoming an entrepreneur—or who has already started their own business but needs a little extra help to take it to the next level.
My journey into entrepreneurship has been one of learning, resilience, and passion. Through my candles, I’m not just creating scents—I’m spreading love and light, one candle at a time.
